American Food Chains That Aren't in Japan

Last updated August 2026

The short answer: no, there is no Chick-fil-A in Japan, no Chipotle, no In-N-Out Burger, no Raising Cane's, no Wingstop, and no Waffle House. Japan has a strong US food presence — McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, and Panda Express (several outlet mall locations) are all here — but some beloved American chains haven't made it, and knowing this before you travel saves a frustrating mid-trip search.

Chains Not Available in Japan

Chipotle Mexican Grill Not in Japan

Chipotle has no locations in Japan. Mexican fast-casual food in the Chipotle style — burritos, bowls, carnitas — is not widely available in Japan at all. In major cities, you can find independent Mexican restaurants in expat-heavy neighborhoods, but a Chipotle-equivalent does not exist. This is consistently the most-searched US chain that isn't in Japan. Full guide: Chipotle in Japan

Chick-fil-A Not in Japan

Chick-fil-A has no locations in Japan and no announced expansion plans. If you're craving fried chicken in Japan, the best options are: KFC (~1,200 locations), FamilyMart's Fami Chiki, or Lawson's Karaage-kun nuggets. McDonald's Japan also offers Shaka Shaka Chicken, a seasoned crispy chicken popular with locals. Full guide: Chick-fil-A in Japan

In-N-Out Burger Not in Japan

In-N-Out Burger operates only in the western United States and has no presence in Japan. For a quality burger in Japan, Burger King (Whopper) and MOS Burger (a beloved Japanese chain serving its own style of burgers) are the primary options. McDonald's Japan's Teriyaki Burger has also developed a dedicated following.

Whataburger Not in Japan

Whataburger is primarily a Texas and southern US chain and has no international presence. Japan has no equivalent. Burger King and MOS Burger are the closest burger alternatives.

Panera Bread Not in Japan

Panera Bread has no locations in Japan. Bakery-café concepts exist in Japan — notably Saint Marc and Vie de France — but they serve a Japanese-influenced menu rather than Panera's soups-and-sandwiches model.

Jack in the Box Not in Japan

Jack in the Box operates only in the western United States and has no Japan presence. McDonald's and Burger King cover similar fast food territory in Japan.

Sonic Drive-In Not in Japan

Sonic has no locations in Japan. The drive-in model that defines Sonic doesn't translate well to Japan's urban environment. For a milkshake or similar treat, McDonald's Japan offers McFlurries, and konbini soft serve is widely available and surprisingly good.

Waffle House Not in Japan

Waffle House has no international locations — the chain operates exclusively in the southeastern United States and has never expanded outside the US. Japan has no equivalent 24-hour diner serving waffles and hash browns in the Waffle House style.

Raising Cane's Not in Japan

Raising Cane's has no locations in Japan. The chain has expanded internationally — opening in the UK, Bahrain, and across the Middle East — but has not entered the Japan market. Known for its chicken tenders and signature Cane's Sauce, it remains a US, UK, and Middle East phenomenon for now. For quality fried chicken in Japan, KFC (~1,200 locations) and FamilyMart's FamiChiki are the closest alternatives. Full guide: Raising Cane's in Japan

Wingstop Not in Japan

Wingstop has no locations in Japan. The chain operates internationally in Mexico and parts of Southeast Asia, but Japan is not a current market. For chicken wings in Japan, local izakayas typically serve karaage or teba-shio (salt-grilled chicken wings), which are widely available across all major cities. Full guide: Wingstop in Japan

Five Guys Not in Japan

Five Guys has no locations in Japan as of 2026. FG Korea — the South Korean operator of the Five Guys brand — signed an MOU with Five Guys International in 2024 to expand into Japan, with plans for 20+ stores including Tokyo over the following seven years. However, no stores had opened as of the time of this writing. For premium burgers in Japan, MOS Burger and Burger King are the most widely available options.

Jollibee Not in Japan

Jollibee, the Filipino fast food chain known for its fried chicken and Chickenjoy, has no Japan locations. The chain has expanded across Asia and into the US, but Japan is not a current market. KFC (~1,200 locations) and FamilyMart's FamiChiki are the closest fried chicken alternatives for travelers.

Applebee's / Olive Garden / Cracker Barrel Not in Japan

American casual dining chains like Applebee's, Olive Garden, and Cracker Barrel have no Japan presence. Sit-down dining in Japan leans heavily toward Japanese cuisine at comparable or better price points. Yoshinoya, Sukiya, and Matsuya are popular Japanese fast-casual options for hearty sit-down meals.

The Denny's Exception: Not What You Think

Japan does have Denny's — but it is not the same as the American Denny's. Denny's Japan (デニーズ) is a completely separate Japanese family restaurant chain serving Japanese comfort food: soups, rice dishes, tempura, pasta, and Japanese desserts. The branding is similar but the menu, atmosphere, and ownership are entirely different. If you see a Denny's in Japan and walk in expecting pancakes and Grand Slams, you'll be surprised.

What IS Available in Japan

Despite the above gaps, the US food presence in Japan is genuinely strong:

However, more US chains are present than most people expect: McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, Taco Bell (10 locations), and Panda Express all operate in Japan, often with Japan-exclusive menu items worth trying.
