The menu includes burgers, curly fries, onion rings, hot dogs, and the classic Root Beer (served in a frosted mug at some locations). Other US Chains in Okinawa
Beyond A&W, Okinawa has the standard suite of Japanese US chains: McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC, and all three major konbini chains (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson). Coverage is concentrated along Kokusai-dori and the surrounding Makishi area in Naha.
One standout: the Starbucks near Zakimi Castle Ruins — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — has become famous for its setting, with views of ancient Ryukyu castle walls. Worth visiting even if you're not a Starbucks regular.
Taco Rice: Okinawa's American-Japanese Fusion Classic
Before heading to McDonald's, consider trying taco rice — a uniquely Okinawan invention from the 1980s. Created near the US military base in Kin Town, taco rice is seasoned taco meat, shredded cheese, lettuce, and tomato served over a bowl of white rice instead of in a taco shell. It's widely sold across Naha and all of Okinawa and is considered a local specialty. It's the best example of American food culture fusing with Japanese cuisine anywhere in the country.
Kokusai-dori: Best Area for US Food
Kokusai-dori (International Street) is Naha's main tourist thoroughfare — about 1.6 km of shops, restaurants, and street food running from Kencho-mae Station to Makishi. US chains and konbini are concentrated along this corridor and on the side streets branching off it. Most hotels in Naha are within walking distance of Kokusai-dori, making it the most convenient base.
The Makishi Public Market (Ichiba) is a covered market just off Kokusai-dori where vendors sell Okinawan ingredients and prepared food including fresh sashimi and unique local produce. Worth exploring even if you ultimately end up at McDonald's for dinner.
